Herman Rosenblum, M.D., Child & Adolescent Center
Founded in 1985, the Herman Rosenblum, M.D. Child & Adolescent Center was Delaware's first psychiatric day hospital treatment center for young people. The center serves adolescents ages 13–18 who have emotional, academic, behavioral or developmental problems. Students continue to live at home while attending the program weekdays from 8:30 a.m. until 2:15 p.m. They remain an integral part of their family and community while receiving all the diagnostic and therapeutic components of an inpatient program.
The staff consists of psychiatric therapists, family therapists, a certified drug and alcohol counselor, milieu therapists, an educational coordinator and certified classroom teachers. Each student also receives a nursing assessment upon admission. The referring clinician and school personnel remain vital members of the therapeutic team to ensure continuity of care.
Each student engages in individual therapy two to three times per week, as well as daily group therapy. Weekly family therapy is an integral and required part of the program as well. The program also includes art and other expressive therapies, recreational activities, substance-abuse groups, healthy-choices groups and opportunities for socialization.
Students continue their education in daily classes taught by certified school teachers, and they receive an average of two hours of individualized instruction each day. Our educational coordinator works with teachers and parents, and determines if each child is performing at grade level. Recommendations are made to the student's home school, and a plan may be developed to transition to a more appropriate academic curriculum when necessary.
As discharge approaches, students and parents are referred to community outpatient therapists to continue their treatment and medication follow-up, and a support network is established.
