General Practice Dentistry Residency
Whether you want to go into private practice or on to graduate school, Christiana Care's residency in general practice dentistry gives you the clinical experience to be prepared. Our one-year program exposes you to patients whose needs range from basic dental care to advanced restorative dentistry, implants and oral surgery. This variety of patients comes as a result of our position as a major provider of primary medical and dental care, a regional referral center and Delaware's only Level I trauma center.
Choosing one of the nation's largest teaching institutions for your residency puts you into a nine-chair dental clinic, four of which are dedicated to general dentistry, that is fully equipped to work with an attending or assistant. There, you get hands-on training in all of the dental specialties. One of the strengths of the program is the opportunity to work in the operating room, under direct supervision, where you treat special-needs patients who have complex medical, behavioral or anatomical problems.
The program includes several special rotations. You work in our health system's emergency and anesthesia departments. You practice oral medicine and oral pathology as part of a medical team treating pediatric and medically-compromised patients. You also go outside the hospital to work in urban clinics. These facilities broaden your exposure to different practice environments. You also treat patients who otherwise would not get dental care and gain an understanding of the access-to-care problems affecting most states and communities.
The Section of Implantology provides about 250 hours of clinical training and instruction in treating patients who would benefit from implants. You learn how to create and execute a treatment plan. One afternoon each week is specifically dedicated to implant prosthodontics and seminars. Restorations range from single crowns to CAD CAM designed full arch prostheses.
The Advanced Restorative Dentistry program will give you the opportunity to be involved with large, complex cases. Specialists in endo, perio and pedo are assigned to the clinic at specific times and are available to share their knowledge and clinical skills. Oral surgery residents and attendings are available as well to help master these skills
These experiences help you to refine your dental skills and allow you to network with other dental professionals who can help you attain the next plateau in your career. Our staff includes full-time dentists as well as volunteers who are general practitioners and specialists in all of the dental disciplines
Most of our residents go on to private practice, with the balance moving on to graduate school. Recent graduates have gone to orthodontic, surgery, pedodontic and periodontal programs.
Our General Practice Dentistry Residency Program accepts eight applicants each year and is not involved with the Post Doctoral Dental Matching Program.
