Research
The Emergency Medicine Research Department would like to welcome you to Christiana Care! We have a long tradition of supporting resident research projects and would like to answer a few questions regarding our program:
How much support will I have to get my scholarly activity done?
In a word, lots. From Day 1 you are assigned a research faculty mentor. This experienced faculty member meets with you at least twice yearly to go over your goals, ideas and progress. You also have access to 5 full-time EM Research Nurses who are able to assist you with planning your project, submitting to the IRB and collecting data. Finally, Christiana Care librarians are available to assist with literature searches and we have many tools available for writing your abstracts and manuscripts.
Do I have to do a scholarly project?
Well, yes. This is a requirement of all EM residents. However, all our residents were authors on the EMRA Antibiotic Guide, edited by one of our research faculty, Dr. Brian Levine. Further, many residents choose to submit their CPC case presentations to the Delaware Medical Journal and other publications. Finally, most of our residents choose to take their scholarly activity to the next level and present their abstracts at national meetings.
What are the major areas of research interest at Christiana Care?
Our faculty have a number of interests. They include Ultrasound (Dr. Paul Sierzenski and Dr. Michael Breyer), EMS (Dr. Ross Megargel), Infection Disease and Psychiatry (Dr. Brian Levine), Neurology/Stroke (Dr. Sierzenski), Overcrowding and Administration (Dr. Heather Farley) and Resident Education (Dr. Breyer and Dr. Farley).
How successful are residents at getting their projects accepted at national meetings?
Very! At this year's ACEP Research Forum in Seattle, Washington, Christiana Care EM residents presented 9 abstracts. More than 20 residents were involved with these projects. Christiana Care residents have also had presented multiple abstracts at the National Association of EMS Physicians (NAEMSP), Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) and the World Congress on Ultrasound in Emergency and Critical Care Medicine.
What if I want more information about research at Christiana Care?
Feel free to contact Melissa Bollinger, RN, Manager of EM Research, at 302-733-4189, mbollinger@christianacare.org, or Michael Breyer, MD, Associate Program Director, at 302-733-1330, mbreyer@christianacare.org. We would be happy to answer any further questions you may have.
