Center for Heart & Vascular Health

Cardiology

A cardiologist is a doctor with special training and skill in finding, treating and preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels. If your primary-care doctor believes that you might have a significant heart condition, he may consult with a cardiologist or refer you to one. A cardiologist may recommend any of a variety of tests that can evaluate symptoms like shortness of breath, heart murmurs, chest pains or dizzy spells. Cardiologists are specially trained to treat heart attacks, heart failure and other serious diseases.

A cardiologist is not a heart surgeon, although your cardiologist may work closely with a heart surgeon as part of your heart-health care team.
