Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and maxillofacial surgery is a specialty of dentistry that includes the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of disease, injuries and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. It is a recognized international surgical specialty that merges medicine, dentistry and surgery.
Specifically, an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is a highly trained surgeon treating the entire caniomaxillofacial complex: the mouth, jaws, face, skull and associated structures.
Maxillofacial surgeons are usually initially qualified in dentistry and have undergone further surgical training. All OMS training programs integrate medical education into the residency, and approximately half of the programs incorporate the earning of a medical degree into the curriculum.
Further subspecialized surgical traning can be sought via a fellowship in the following areas:
- Head and neck cancer, and microvascular reconstruction.
- Cosmetic facial surgery.
- Craniofacial surgery/pediatric maxillofacial surgery.
- Maxillofacial trauma.
- Temporomandibular joint disorders.
As a comprehensive, university-affiliated teaching hospital with a fully accredited oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program, Christiana Care is at the forefront of the specialty in education, research and surgical technique.
